Let’s Get Physical
By Kelly Monroe
Are you like me and struggle to exercise and eat healthy? I must admit I am “on again off again” with exercise, and oftentimes it’s hard to eat my vegetables and whole foods.
But, recently I had some blood work done and while it wasn’t bad, it could use some improvement. It made me more aware of how important my health is for my well-being.

I also recognize the connection between our body and our spirit. Scripture teaches us that they are not separate, but both are a vital part of what makes us a whole being. When our physical health suffers our spiritual can as well.
First Corinthians 6:19-20 teaches us about our body being a temple of the Holy Spirit. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
So, what are some of the things that I have been implementing to make sure I take care of the physical which houses the spiritual?
First, I started including one healthy meal a day which includes vegetables and lean protein.
Secondly, I began prioritizing exercise– even if it’s just walking outside. Walking outside is also a great way to get your vitamin D. I’ve also found that while I walk, it’s a great time to talk to Jesus.

Another important step I’m trying is turning off electronics at least one hour before bedtime. Studies show blue light is not good for your circadian rhythms. Reading a book is a great alternative.
And lastly, I would say, don’t be fooled into thinking that taking some quiet time for yourself is being unproductive. Actually, Jesus often got alone to spend time with His Father. We should follow His example. I like to have some quiet time with Jesus through prayer and Bible reading first thing in the morning. I feel when I talk to Jesus first, my day goes smoother. But that may not be possible for all schedules. The important thing is to prioritize time alone with God and work it in your schedule everyday. Maybe for you, it is during your lunch break or at night before bedtime.
Ultimately, we are being good stewards of what God blessed us with to take care of our temple.
