I Choose to Serve

By Lorie Newman

One of the last things Jesus did before He went to the Cross was to serve. He knew He was about to suffer a brutal death for our sins and yet, He CHOSE to serve His disciples. He got down on his hands and knees and washed their feet.

I’ve often been asked how I have been able to continue ministry after losing my son, Daniel, to suicide several years ago. And I truly believe so much of my healing was found in serving. I CHOSE to serve instead of hiding away and sinking in deep grief. I certainly did grieve. I *still* grieve my son. But something supernatural happens when you CHOOSE to serve even in the midst of suffering.

It blesses others and somehow also sets you free from the ache of suffering.

So, what about you?

Are you suffering with grief? Send a card or flowers to another person who is grieving a loss.

Are you sick and in the bed? Call or text 3 people who you know are also ill, and pray with them for their healing.

Are you struggling financially? Pray about how you can be a blessing to someone else who is struggling to pay their bills.

Are you battling depression or just a sense of deep loss? Intentionally pray for someone else who is battling the same thing. Send them a card or a bouquet of flowers just to let them know that you care.

Get up, friend.

Wash your face.

CHOSE to serve someone. It will lighten their load, and in turn it will lighten yours too.

  1. I love this! I need to get myself “other”focused when I get preoccupied with my own stuff. Thank you for writing this!
