Fasting for Breakthrough

by Kelly Monroe

When 2026 began, it brought the excitement of many new beginnings and the promise of change. This year however, has already started out with much confusion and chaos in our nation and in our world.

And it can be so disheartening.

But, God said in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” This should be encouraging to all Believers in Jesus Christ, despite what we are seeing in the media and even what we may be dealing with in our own personal lives.

Jesus has overcome the world! He’s overcome sin and death!

And He brings peace where there is chaos.

At times when we may face something that has been going on for a long time or something extremely intense, it’s in these times that we may need to turn to prayer and also to fasting.

Matthew 6:16 says, “But when you fast…”

Did you take notice of the word “when?” This verse doesn’t say if you fast but when you fast. I believe there are some strongholds and some situations that require fasting along with prayer. At those times, we must humble ourselves and die to our flesh. Yes, that means starve the flesh for a time. We must believe God can break through the chains that bind us, our loved ones, and even the nations.

We should never assume that what is happening in our lives or even around the world must just be my lot in life or simply the way things are these days. Jesus can and DOES turn what the Enemy meant for evil into good. And fasting can be a powerful weapon for that change.

So try fasting. Start slow if you have never fasted. Maybe just skip one meal, then try fasting for 24 hours, or even try a Daniel fast. However you choose to fast, God will honor your faithfulness as you draw closer to Him through prayer AND fasting.
